How to Apply for a Passport for Baby 2022

Congratulations on the birth of your child! If you plan to take your little bundle of joy on an international trip, then you’ll need a passport. Here’s what you need to know about getting a passport for baby 2022.

How to apply for passport

Your child born in 2022 will need a passport to travel internationally

A passport is a legal document that proves your citizenship in the United States. It’s required for international travel, and if you’re under 18 years old, you’ll need one to go abroad.

Passports are valid for 10 years — but rest assured that once you apply for one for your baby, it’ll be valid through their 18th birthday (and then some).

A child passport is valid for 5 years.

A child passport is valid for 5 years. This applies to children born on or after October 6, 2013 who have not yet reached their 16th birthday. A child’s passport is the same as an adult’s in that it can be used to travel abroad and return to the U.S., but is only valid for 5 years instead of 10 years like an adult’s passport.

If you were born before October 6, 2013 and decided not to apply for a new passport during your first renewal period (which was 8 years), then please note that your current 10-year passport will expire on its own terms at some point between 2022–2025 depending upon when you were born. If your current passport expired before January 1st 2022 and you still want another decade of international travel with all its benefits, then there are options available which we will explain later in this guide!

A minor’s document is also valid for 5 years but cannot be renewed by mail or online; only by visiting an acceptance agency (like our office) where we will verify your identity along with other necessary documents such as proof of citizenship from parent(s). Minors must show proof of citizenship if they live abroad or have dual citizenship status with another country because this would make them ineligible for a U.S Passport Card only (which does not allow them entry into certain countries).

You will need to apply in person.

  • You must apply in person.
  • Bring proof of identity, such as a driver’s license or passport.
  • Bring proof of relationship to the baby, like a birth certificate and social security card (if applicable).
  • Bring the baby! They need to be present so you can prove that you are actually their parent/guardian/etc., and they must have a valid U.S.-issued passport or travel document.

A passport application requires two adults to be present.

You will need to bring two adults with you to the passport application appointment. One adult must be a parent or legal guardian of your child.

If you are applying for a passport for your baby or toddler, make sure that you have all the required documents in order before making an appointment. You will need:

  • Your child’s birth certificate (original or certified copy)
  • Your child’s Social Security number (or proof of non-existence)
  • Your child’s proof of citizenship (birth abroad) or naturalization certificate (if born in U.S.)
  • Your child’s proof of identity, such as a driver’s license, school ID card, hospital record etc., which shows their full name and date of birth
  • Proof showing where you live currently

You will need proper identification and documentation.

To apply for a passport, you will need to bring the following items:

  • Your child’s birth certificate
  • Your child’s social security card in case there is one
  • A copy of your child’s proof of citizenship (usually a copy of your child’s birth certificate) and photo ID (usually a copy of your own driver’s license)

You also need to bring official identification that shows both parents’ names and signatures. If you are applying as a minor parent, you must have written consent from the other parent or legal guardian.

Form DS-11 is the application form you’ll use.

Form DS-11 is the application form you’ll use. You can get one from the US Department of State website, or you may choose to visit a passport agency. If an online passport application service is available in your state, this may be another viable option.

You have to pay 2 fees, one for the application and one for the execution of the passport.

  • Application Fee

The application fee is $110, which you must pay at the time you submit your passport application. This fee covers all future renewals of your child’s passport as well as any associated fees. If you choose to expedite processing on behalf of your child and pay an additional $60 fee, then this fee will also cover all future renewals and other associated costs related to issuing a new passport card or book for your baby. The cost of expediting a newborn’s passport requires that both parents provide proof of citizenship and identity (see How Do I Prove My Baby Is A U.S Citizen?) before their baby can get one.

  • 2nd Fee: Execution Fee

The Execution fee is $25 per applicant over 16 years old; those under 16 years old do not have to pay this charge unless they are included on an adult’s application form (you must include your newborn if you want him/her to be able to use it). The execution fee allows the U.S Department Of State (DOS) to process documents submitted for authentication with our agency stamp along with signatures from DOS officials during routine checks at embassies around globe so that we may ensure authenticity before returning them back home where they belong!

See US Passport Fees for current pricing.

Depending on your child’s age and type of passport, the cost will vary. The U.S. Department of State publishes this information in their Passport Fees table for current pricing on all types of passports.

Additionally, there are different fees depending on whether you apply in person or online:

  • If you apply in person at a passport agency, you’ll pay more than if you use their online service — a difference of $30 or more per application!
  • The Child Newborn Passport Book fee is only $95 regardless of whether it’s applied for at an agency or online.

Processing time can vary but generally takes 4–6 weeks from date of application.

The processing time for a passport can vary, but generally takes 4–6 weeks from the date of application. If you need your child’s passport sooner than that, you can pay an additional fee to have it processed in 2–3 business days. If you are traveling within the next 7 days and need a passport for baby 2022 quickly, you may also choose to expedite the process by taking advantage of this service as well.

You can pay an additional fee to expedite the processing of your child’s passport application if needed sooner than 4–6 weeks.

  • You can pay an additional fee to expedite the processing of your child’s passport application if needed sooner than 4–6 weeks.
  • The cost is $60, or $110 if you need it within 2 weeks.
  • You can apply by fax, mail or online in addition to going into a field office.

Having a baby means you have to get a new passport if you plan to travel with the baby outside the United States.

If you are planning to travel internationally with your baby, then you will need to apply for a passport. This is because babies cannot be included in their parents’ passports and must have their own. To get a new passport, you will need to go in person to the post office or local government building that issues passports. You will also have to bring proper identification and pay two fees: an application fee and an execution fee.

You can also find resources online to help you complete and submit your passport application. There are many websites that provide information and guidance to people who are applying for a passport. Some of these sites include: Passport Info Hub, US Department of State (USDS) Passport Information Center, Travel Docs, International Travel Information (ITI), Passports & More, Passport Solutions (PS), USA Visas, International Passport Services Association (IPSA), US Embassy in New Delhi
